Please review the four themes of Our American Story: Kentucky's Voices and select ONE for your application.

Moving Together

From rocking on the front porch while swapping stories or kicking up our heels at a barn dance, to cheering on our kids’ ball teams and coming together for a festival downtown, every community and family have ways of movement that show who we are and the communities we belong to. This discussion guide invites you to look at the traditions of Moving Together in your community that are important or unique to you as well as how these traditions bring folks together, remind people of the past, and spark hopes for the future.

Harmonizing Together

Music has always been more than just sound. Music is a way of coming together and of speaking when words fall short. From church choirs and bluegrass jams to high school bands and front porch pickin’, music reminds us that our voices matter and that every person helps make the song complete. This guide invites your community to reflect on how music has shaped local traditions and relationships, brought people together in both hard times and in good, and what it teaches us about listening to one another even when we don’t always sing the same tune.

Growing Together

Festivals that honor food, planting, and the harvest are more than just fun events – they also remind us that our lives are deeply tied to the rhythms of nature, and that our community changes as the land changes. The food we grow and the meals we cook and share tell their own story too, carrying memories of family, faith, and community, while also pointing toward the kind of future we hope to build. This guide is designed to spark conversation about how your community is Growing Together and allow the community to share what makes their land and food unique to them.

Remembering Together

Every community has its own history—stories of hard work, traditions passed down, times of struggle, and moments of celebration. Whether it’s remembering the old schoolhouse, honoring those who served, or sharing family stories at the dinner table, commemoration connects us to one another and gives our community strength. Sharing the stories we remember isn’t just about talking about the past. We’re figuring out what it means for us right now, and how it can help us keep our community strong for the future. This discussion guide invites you to share the stories of your community with the nation.
